Arif Jamal alias Shanu Badmash, facing several cases of murder and attempt to murder, was shot dead by six bike-borne assailants at around 11 PM yesterday outside his home, they said.
Family members and locals, hearing the gunshots, rushed to the spot and took Jamal to the district hospital where doctors declared him dead late in the night, police said.
As the family members protested, SSP Shalabh Mathur and other senior police officials arrived at the scene and tried to pacify them. Gauging the tension in the area, heavy police force has been deployed.
He was serving jail sentence in a murder of a youth and was out on bail since last two months, police said.
Several police teams, led by SP (East) D Pradeep have been formed and raids are being conducted at several places to nab the culprit soon, police said, adding, the body was sent for the post-mortem.
