India has a brilliant opportunity to be a fantastic partner of the United States, corporate leaders said today, amid concerns over the fallout of steps being taken by American President Donald Trump.
"To my mind, he (Trump) is negotiating... He seems to be throwing bombs in all directions and that is what is creating chaos," SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said.
Since taking over as President on January 20, certain steps initiated by Trump, including restrictions imposed on migrants from certain countries, have raised concerns worldwide. Besides, the US has decided to pull out of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal.
While mentioning that there is a possibility of showdown between the Trump administration and China, Singh said India has a brilliant opportunity to be a fantastic partner of the US.
"We need to find the opportunities... And also look at our own self interest," he added.
About Indo-US ties, DCM Shriram Chairman Ajay Shriram said there should be a balanced approach.
According to Hero Motocorp Joint Managing Director Sunil Kant Munjal, India has opportunities with the US, the UK and few other regions.
Meanwhile, these leaders pitched for ways to boost consumption in the economy.
Singh said corporate tax rate should be reduced but it cannot be done in isolation, suggesting that there should be changes also on the personal income tax front.
They were speaking at a panel discussion on 'Budget Aaj Tak' event organised by Aaj Tak news channel and CII here.
At another session, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said the Budget is about striking the balance and efforts are being made to increase investments in the country.
