The scuffle took place this morning when Swaran Singh, resident of Patti village in Tarn Taran, had a heated argument with his fellow inmate Kiran Kumar, they said.
Singh was allegedly attacked by Kumar following which he was injured and taken to hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead, police said.
Swaran Singh was lodged in a case of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, whereas Kiran Kumar was facing charges of murder and dacoity.
Singh's body was sent for postmortem, they said.
