Some inmates at Hooghly jail today pelted stones at the office of the jail superintendent as they objected to a proposed move to transfer a fellow prisoner to another prison, a jail official said.
The incident occurred this evening after an inmate, Giri, was told that he would be transferred to some other prison.
Giri's supporters in the jail even set a nearby godown on fire, which was only doused after police managed to send the prisoners back to their cells.
"Members of Giri's group, who are lodged in the prison started pelting stones at the office of the jail superintendent and other officials. Police had to be called in to handle the situation," a senior official of the state correctional department said.
The official said that Giri was involved in a tussle with other prisoners during a football match a few days back.
It was claimed, meanwhile, that one policeman and some other jail security staff were injured in the brick-batting.
