The gang was accused of stealing over 200 transformers from various districts including Sangrur, Barnala, Mansa and Ludhiana.
Police stopped a vehicle during checking near Jhaneri village and recovered more than 1.08 quintals of copper wire extracted from stolen transformers along with 2.5 kg contraband, SSP Sangrur Mandeep Singh Sidhu told reporters.
Sindhu said a large number of iron-cutters of various types and other equipment for removing and cutting transformers were also recovered from the vehicle.
Five persons were arrested from the spot while another six members of the gang were still at large, he added.
