Indian Premier League (IPL) betting rackets were today busted in Bihar and neighbouring Jharkhand with the police seizing a total of over Rs 33 lakh in cash from Patna and Jamshedpur.

While seven persons were arrested in Patna, another one was taken into custody in Jamshedpur, the police in the two cities said.

The police conducted a raid at a house in Mango area of Jamshedpur yesterday night and caught one person red handed when a match was on, Senior Superintendent of Police of East Singhbhum district, Anoop Birtheray, said.

The police team recovered Rs 26.44 lakh in cash, about 390 grams of gold jewellery, 13 mobile phones, two lap tops, a tab, two ATM cards and a four-wheeler from the accused, Birtheray told a press conference today.

He said investigation was on and there is a possibility that the racket is spread across the country.

In Patna, the police today claimed to have busted the IPL betting racket with the arrest of seven persons who were caught with Rs 7 lakh in cash and 10 mobile phones.

The arrests took place during two raids conducted in Rupaspur police station area of the city, following a tip-off that a group of anti-social elements there were running a betting racket, Senior Superintendent of Police, Patna, Manu Maharaj said.

The racket was active in different parts of the country, he said.
