JK Assembly panel asks HPP to ensure protection of environment

The Committee on Environment, headed by CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami today met here and asked the HPP construction agencies to ensure protection of environment.

Speaking at the occasion, Tarigami said that JK was a tourist destination providing livelihood to thousands of families, so protection of environment was most important.

The committee reviewed the overall functioning of Power Development Department (PDD) with special reference to the impact on environment due to construction of power projects in the state.

He called for conducting detailed survey to ensure minimum damage to the environment before taking up the construction of power projects.

Several legislators attended the meeting and gave their suggestions in containing the hazardous impact on environment due to construction of power projects and conservation of the fragile ecology of the state.

Earlier, Principal Secretary of PDD, B R Sharma, gave a detailed resume of the working of the department and measures taken to curb the impacts of power projects on environment.
