Katara case: Life imprisonment simplicitor inconsequential: HC

The life imprisonment simplicitor would really be inconsequential and completely inadequate for the convicts in Nitish Katara murder case as the deleterious effect was not only upon the victim or his family but upon the entire society, the Delhi High court said today.
The observation was made by the High Court to enhance the life term of three convicts -- Vikas and Vishal Yadav to 30 years imprisonment and 25 years incarceration to Sukhdev Yadav alias Pehelwan -- without the benefit of remission to them.
"Crimes were perpetrated in an organized and systematic manner. The amplitude of the gravity of offence, its nature and its deleterious effect, not only upon the victim or his family but upon the entire civilised society at large, cries for the need that the defendants be adequately punished.

If the sentence of life imprisonment simplicitor were to be remitted or commuted on expiry of 14 years in terms of the CrPC provisions, the sentence would "really be inconsequential and completely inadequate so far as the crimes in the instant case is concerned," a bench of justices Gita Mitttal and J R Midha said.
