Writer-director Damien Chazelle's ode to classic Hollywood musicals, "La La Land," won seven nods in all, including for its lead pair Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the comedy or musical categories.
Chazelle earned nominations for best director and best screenplay.
"La La Land" is facing competition from "20th Century Women", superhero drama "Deadpool", Meryl Streep-starrer "Florence Foster Jenkins" and "Sing Street" and "Moonlight" in the best comedy/musical film at the Golden Globes.
Both "La La Land" and "Moonlight" have emerged as awards favourites and if the Globe nominations are an indication, they are expected to be a front-runner at the Oscars too.

Patel will be pitted against Ali ('Moonlight'), Jeff Bridges ('Hell or High Water'), Simon Helberg ('Florence Foster Jenkins') and Aaron Taylor Johnson ('Nocturnal Animals') in the best supporting actor category.
"Manchester By The Sea" and "Moonlight" were nominated for best movie, drama, along with "Hacksaw Ridge," "Hell or High Water" and "Lion."
"Manchester By The Sea," a drama about a family grappling with tragedy, earned five nominations.
Casey Affleck, Joel Edgerton, Andrew Garfield, Viggo Mortensen and Denzel Washington will vie for best actor in a motion picture drama while Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain, Isabelle Huppert, Ruth Negga and Natalie Portman are competing for best actress in that category.
In the musical or comedy actress category, Stone will compete with Lily Collins ('Rules Don't Apply'), Meryl Streep ('Florence Foster Jenkins'), Annette Bening ('20th Century Women') and Hailee Steinfeld ('The Edge of Seventeen').
Gosling is pitted against fellow Canadian and namesake Ryan Reynolds ('Deadpool') in the best actor musical or comedy category. Others who have made it to the list are -- Collin Farrell for the "Lobster", Hugh Grant for "Florence Foster Jenkins" and Jonah Hill for "Wardogs".
