Leading builder Sanjay Bajpai, an accused in the government land encroachment case, today surrendered before a local court which sent him to police custody for three days.
Maudhapara police had registered a case against Sanjay Bajpai Builders for allegedly using forged documents to sell several acres of governmental land in Dunda, Sejbahar and Boriyakala villages on the outskirts of Raipur.
A look-out notice was also issued to prevent him from escaping to any foreign country.
"Sanjay Bajpai surrendered before the court today at around 11 am. Judicial Magistrate (first class) Yogita Vinay Wasnik sent him in three days judicial custody, after which he was sent to jail," Bajpai's counsel Faisal Rizvi told PTI.
"The court has asked police not to torture him physically and conduct his medical examination before sending him to the custody and before bringing him to the court on June 17 for next hearing," Rizvi said.
The committee probing the land encroachment case in Dunda, Sejbahar and Boriyakala villages had recommended filing of First Information Report (FIR) against the builder.
Joint Director, Town and Country Planning, Raipur Region, Zahid Ali had already been suspended in connection with the case.
The probe committee had told the government that Bajapai Builders had encroached 9.714 hectares of government land in Dunda, Sejbahar and Boriyakala villages, carved out more than 250 plots and sold them to people.
