A joint movement of six political parties including the CPI(M), CPI and MDMK today urged the Centre not to hang 1993 Mumbai blast death row convict Yakub Memon.
"Capital punishment must be abolished in India. Central government should come forward to rescind the death sentence of Memon as a top official of RAW had said that he should not be hanged since he helped India," a resolution adopted at a meeting of the parties said.
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi and Gandhiya Makkal Iyakkam were the other three parties in the movement.
B Raman, a late top official of RAW had favoured clemency for Yakub Memon on the ground that he had cooperated with investigating agencies and does not deserve to be hanged.
Referring to this view of the late official, the parties urged that Memon be spared the gallows.
Another resolution wanted the BJP Chief Ministers and Union Ministers allegedly facing graft charges to resign their posts and face probe.
The Centre must not go ahead with the Land Bill and also with the amendments proposed to the Child Labour Act, another resolution demanded.
Protests will be held on August 13 in five Tamil Nadu towns to press these demands, the parties said in its resolution.
