Maha budget: major hike in allocation for PWD

The BJP-led Maharashtra Government today announced a substantial hike in the budgetary allocation for Public Works Department.
Against Rs 4,357 crore last year, the budget for 2017-18, presented today, allocated Rs 7,000 crore for PWD.
Last year's allocation for state PWD was even less than the Mumbai municipal corporation's outlay for city roads.
The state PWD looks after maintenance of 90,000 km of roads and more than 16,000 bridges.
Maintenance of guest houses and some of the government buildings including the state secretariat 'Mantralaya' is also PWD's responsibility.
The Shiv Sena-controlled Mumbai civic body had provided Rs 5,184 crore last year for the roads.

Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said in his budget speech that road repair and maintenance works will now be undertaken for stretches of 10 km each, so that the work could be supervised properly.
