This festival will conclude a two-month long campaign in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and mark the beginning of a 15-year-long journey to activate and mobilise young Indians to ensure India leads the fight against extreme poverty, said a statement issued by Global Citizen India which is organising the event.
The Global Citizen Festival India will bring together popular culture and public policy in one of the largest gatherings for a social cause the country has ever witnessed, it said.
Various influencers and performers including British rock band Coldplay, Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, wrestler Sakshi Malik have committed their voice to this movement and are performing for free, the statement said.
The event would be also attended by leading change makers like Kailash Satyarthi and Muhammad Yunus.
Over the last six weeks approximately 500,000 committed Global Citizens from across India are leading a force for change and have taken over 15,00,000 actions under the #ShuruaatHoonMain banner since the movement launched on September 12, 2016.
"We are thankful to the Maharashtra government and the United Nations for their support of this initiative, which will allow the work and voice of five lakh Global Citizens across the country to make a positive impact in the areas of gender equality, education, sanitation and hygiene over the next 12 months.
"A number of commitments, which will benefit the state of Maharashtra and India at large, will be announced at the festival. We will work closely with our local and global NGO partners to actualise these commitments," the statement added.
