Geeta was arrested from Model Town area yesterday when she was to leave for her hometown, P Karunakaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West), said.

Her arrest came following a complaint filed by one Aneesh Bhola claiming that his maid might have stolen his wife's diamond jewellery which was missing from their house and could be fleeing.

She had told the family that she will be going to her hometown. She was working there for the past one week.

Police went to her house and apprehended her when she tried to flee. A search at her house yielded stolen jewellery worth Rs ten lakh.

She also told police that she stole jewellery from the house of another employer two months ago, police said.

"Geeta was born in a poor family in Bengal. Ten-twelve years ago, she came to Delhi alongwith her sister Rajkumari for work and married with one Dhanjee Giri.

"She used to work as maid servant and her husband was working in a factory but they found their income inadequate .

"To get rid off her economic problems, Geeta started committing small theft. Earlier also Geeta had committed a similar theft in one of the houses at Mukherjee Nagar but she was successful in escaping the police then," Karunakaran said.
