Maize growers advised to sell crop now, prices to come down

With huge arrival of maize from Bihar has brought down the prices, a market intelligence unit of Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TAU) today advised farmers to sell the crop immediately on harvest.
The prices of maize have come down to below Rs 1,200 per quintal due to increased arrival of crop from Bihar.
At Udumalpet market, the prices are ruling in the range of Rs 1,200-1,250 per quintal and expected to come down further, trade analysts said.
The key factors for getting better price are maize grains having less than 12 per cent moisture content and less than two per cent fungus, according to Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

It has analysed the wholesale prices of maize that prevailed in the last 11 years in Udumalpet regulated market to provide market intelligence for the major maize growing districts of Tamil Nadu and arrived at the prices during November-December.
In Tamil Nadu, maize constitutes 25 per cent for livestock feed, 49 per cent of poultry feed and 12 per cent of maize goes to industrial purposes, with an expected demand of around 5,000 tonnes per day.
Arrivals to Tamil Nadu, from local areas like Perambalur, Palani, Oddanchatram, Virudhunagar, Arrupukottai and Udumalpet will commence from January onwards, while arrivals from Bihar had already commenced and will end by December and arrivals from Karnataka are expected from January till May, it said.
