The accused, Genda Lal, had kidnapped the little girl two days back after which he tried to sexually assault her, they said.
The matter came to light when the parents of the missing girl filed a report with the Baghsevania police station following which a hunt was launched to trace her.
After a search, she was found lying near a colony with injury marks over her body.
Police rushed her to a government hospital for treatment where her medical examination was conducted which confirmed that she was assaulted and had injury marks on her body including private parts, police said.
A case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the IPC, the DIG said, adding that the accused had a past criminal record and was arrested in a rape as well as a theft case earlier also.
