A 63-year-old man in China was today put on trial for allegedly murdering six people and injuring four others in a violent spree last year.
The incident occurred on June 22 when Fan Jieming allegedly beat a colleague surnamed Zhang to death at a chemical factory in Shanghai's Baoshan District over a dispute.
He then took a hunting rifle hidden in his dormitory and asked a driver to drive him to a different district. He gunned down the driver on the way and then drove away with the vehicle, according to prosecutors.
The prosecution said he then killed a guard at the gate of a nearby military barracks and took the soldier's gun, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
After returning to the plant, he allegedly killed another three people with his rifle.
Fan also allegedly injured three people seriously and left another with minor injuries in the violent spree.
He was captured by police, who were at the factory investigating the case.
Fan Jieming has been charged with murder, robbery, and forcible seizure, illegal purchase and possession of guns, according to the Shanghai No 2 Intermediate People's Court.
During the trial, Fan argued that he committed the killing of his colleague Zhang "in the heat of passion" after their argument, instead of intentional killing.
He expressed regret and guilt over killing the driver and the guard of the military barracks.
