A court here has sentenced a 31-year-old man to life imprisonment for rape and murder of a woman in Dakshina Kannada district in the state.
Judge of the Sixth Additional District and Sessions Court Syedunnisa on Friday sentenced the man for rape and murder of the 40-year-old woman who was living alone in Marody village in Belthangady taluk in the district.
The judge also imposed a fine of Rs two lakh on the man.
Laxman Acharya had developed an illicit relationship with the woman seven years ago. He raped and killed her in August 2012 after she insisted that he marry her.
Based on a complaint filed by the brother of the deceased, Acharya was subsequently arrested and he confessed to the crime.
Venoor police conducted an investigation and filed the charge sheet.
A total of 23 witnesses were examined in the case and 20 documents scrutinised.
