DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran has declared movable assets of Rs 11.67 crore which includes that of his spouse and a dependent son and shown that his income grew 64.79 per cent in five years.

The 52-year old DMK leader, seeking election from the Central Chennai Lok Sabha seat, has also declared that charges were framed against him in the telephone exchange case by the CBI and that he has filed an appeal.

The case relates to alleged use of telephone facilities above the entitlement and causing a loss of about Rs 1.79 crore to the exchequer, he said.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Maran had declared movable assets worth Rs 10.94 crore -including that of his wife and children- and in 2009 polls he had declared Rs 3.66 crore assets.

The former Communications Minister has a Toyota Fortuner car valued at Rs 13.50 lakh, 42 grams gold and Rs 57,700 cash on hand, while his wife has 2,202 grams gold.

In his nomination papers, he has declared movable assets with a value of Rs 3,65,15,154 crore, his wife Rs 3,09,20,173 crore and a dependent son Rs 4,92,96,289 crore and total Rs 11,67,31,616 crore.

As per the income tax return of 2013-14, his income was Rs 1,72,14,770, which grew to Rs 2,83,68,820 in 2017-18, a rise of 64.79 per cent.

Maran, his spouse and son do not have any self acquired immovable property, which was consistent with the declarations made by him in 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

The value of the former Union minister's inherited immovable assets is Rs 59,000 and Maran's family does not have liabilities.

Under the head 'liabilities under dispute,' Maran said the income tax authorities "wanted to reopen the assessment for year 2008-09 and 2009-10," which has been challenged in the Madras High Court.

Dayanidhi Maran, son of late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi's nephew 'Murasoli,' Maran, was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Central Chennai in 2004.
