Top officials of Delhi Metro, the capital's signature public transport utility, have decided to go 'car free' every Monday, a move aimed at encouraging more employees of the corporation to adopt the same practice.
This comes days after the Delhi government observed the first 'Car-Free Day' on a stretch between Red Fort and India Gate which saw the participation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia, cabinet ministers, MLAs and other government officers.
"The senior management of DMRC, including Managing Director Mangu Singh, have decided to dedicate every Monday of the week as 'car free day' and use public transport to commute to and from office," a metro official said.
However, they won't avail public transport or the metro as of now.
As part of the arrangement a bus will ferry the officials from their residence at Metro Enclave at Pushp Vihar to Barakhamba Road's Metro Bhawan and back every Monday. It has been started from today.
Transport Minister Gopal Rai said the city government will organise the next Car-Free Day in Dwarka area on November 22 and the restrictions will continue throughout the day.
Under the 'Ab Bus Karein' campaign, government will organise such events on the 22nd of every month.
