The Mangalore International Airport (MIA) has recorded a four per cent growth in passenger traffic during the first six months of the current fiscal.
A total of 6.57 lakh domestic and international passengers travelled by the MIA from April to September this year, as against the passenger traffic of 6.32 lakh in the corresponding period last year, Airport Director J T Radhakrishna said.
In the first half of current fiscal, the growth in the number of international passengers was 24 per cent while the number of domestic passengers was reduced by five per cent, he said in a release here.
The airport handled 2,36,789 international air passengers during the first six months this year, while 1,91,952 passengers travelled by MIA in the same period last year. However, the number of domestic air passengers came down to 4,19,052 as against 4,40,309 passengers last year, he said.
Many tier-two airports like Trichy, Madurai, Tirupati, Bhopal, Ahmedabad, Guwahati and Bhubaneshwar had also seen a reduction in the number of domestic passengers, he said.
MIA had seen 15 to 21 per cent growth during 2012-13 and 2013-14 and the current year's growth was not that substantial. The passenger traffic would increase once more domestic and international destinations were added to MIA, Radhakrishna said.
