Moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today suggested involvement of United Nations as a third party for smooth dialogue between India and Pakistan for a resolution on Kashmir issue.
"Hurriyat is desirous of a meaningful dialogue for the development of friendly relation between India and Pakistan. The involvement of third party is imperative for everlasting solution to Kashmir issue," Mirwaiz said in a statement here.
He said trust deficit and frequent breakdown in the dialogue were the biggest hurdles in resolution of outstanding issues.
"This hurdle cannot be overcome without the involvement of a third party and the UN can positively play this role," he said, adding "Kashmir is the oldest unresolved issue on the UN Agenda and it is the primary responsibility of the world body to implement its resolutions on the region."
Welcoming the efforts of the Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharif for resolution on Kashmir issue at the global level, the Hurriyat chairman asked New Delhi to reciprocate positively to the efforts of the neighbouring country.
"Sharif's statement on resolution of Kashmir issue during a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in Dushanbe on the margins of High-Level International Conference on the implementation of the International Decade, Water for Life, was timely and need of the hour," he said.
Mirwaiz said Kashmir is the basic problem behind the bitter relation between India and Pakistan and a lurking threat to the peace in the entire region.
"New Delhi needs to respond positively to the efforts of Pakistan for everlasting resolution of the Kashmir issue," he said.
