The Madras High Court has sought the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission's response on a plea seeking to restrain the TNPSC from recruiting candidates with a degree in engineering to the post of motor vehicle inspector-Grade II.

In his petition, S Dhanapal said such recruitment is illegal as the rules prescribed a diploma in automobile or mechanical engineering as basic qualification for the post.

Admitting the plea, Justice R Mahadevan recently directed the commission to file its response by October 26.

On February 14, the commission issued a notification inviting applications for 113 vacancies for the post.

As per Clause VI of the notification, candidates should have a diploma in automobile or mechanical engineering awarded by a state board of technical education and training.

Besides, the diploma-holder should have experience of having worked for not less than one year on vehicles fitted with petrol and diesel engines on a full-time basis in a workshop for repairing motor vehicles, heavy goods vehicles and heavy passenger motor vehicles.

The petitioner sought to know as to which degree holder can apply for the post, other than those who hold diploma as per the rules.

The commission replied on July 25, informing that candidates with degree in engineering can also apply for the post.

Claiming that recruitment should be made in accordance with the notification without any deviation, the petitioner said deviations, if any, would allow entry of ineligible people and deprive opportunity to many eligible candidates.
