About 2.4 lakh commuters travelled on the first day of the Mumbai metro's operations, Reliance Infrastructure Ltd (RInfra) said today.
The service operated by RInfra, through its special purpose vehicle Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd, was flagged off by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday.
"It was a momentous occasion for us when the commercial operations of Mumbai metro started. Despite being Sunday and opened for public only from noon, 2.4 lakh people travelled. This would redefine the way Mumbaikars travel," RInfra Chief Executive Officer Lalit Jalan said in a statement issued by RInfra.
Chief Minister Chavan, along with Reliance Group Chairman Anil Ambani and other dignitaries, boarded the first metro train at Versova station and took a ride up to Ghatkopar, the company said.
The 11.4 kilometre corridor is estimated to cater to over 7 lakh commuters a day in its first year of operations.
A concessional and promotional fare of Rs 10 is being charged for the first 30 days, irrespective of distance travelled on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, for a single one-way trip.
