Days after shifting a key member of the Special Investigation Division probing the recent murders of two Sangh Parivar leaders, Tamil Nadu Government today announced creation of a new IGP post to head the SID.
Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, who was Commissioner of Police in Tirunelveli, has been transferred and posted as IGP of SID, Chennai, under the Crime Branch CID in a newly created post, an official release said.
The government had on August 5 transferred CB-CID IGP M N Manjunatha, who was part of the SID, and posted him as IG, North Zone.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had constituted the SID to probe the murders of BJP state General Secretary V Ramesh and Hindu Munnani state President Vellaiyappan in Salem and Vellore respectively in the last two months.
The killings evoked condemnation from several political parties with the BJP voicing concern over continuing attacks targeting Sangh Parivar functionaries in the state.
Senior BJP leader L K Advani, who attended a condolence meeting in Salem in memory of Ramesh on August 1, had appreciated Jayalalithaa for setting up the SID and appealed to her to personally monitor the probe and bring to book the real culprits.
In another posting, Anand Kumar Somani, on repatriation from the CBI at the end of his tenure, was made Deputy Inspector General of Police, Madurai Range, in existing vacancy.
