After failing to get permission from the government to go abroad to visit his ailing mother, former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, facing a slew of cases, today brought her to Pakistan.
Zarin Musharraf, 95, arrived in Karachi this afternoon accompanied by some relatives and was driven straight to Zamzama Clifton where Musharraf has been staying since coming to Karachi from Islamabad in May.
Zarin was brought out from the airport terminal in a wheelchair and looked frail and weak.
Before coming to Karachi, she had been hospitalised in Sharjah after suffering from respiratory issues.
Musharraf through his lawyers has moved several petitions in the higher courts, seeking lifting a travel ban on him.
Musharraf, 71, faces treason charges for suspending, subverting and abrogating the Constitution, imposing an emergency in the country in November 2007 and detaining judges of the superior courts.
The military has ruled Pakistan for about half of its 66-year history and no ruler or top military commander has ever faced criminal prosecution before Musharraf.
Since Musharraf returned to Pakistan from self-exile in March last year, he has faced prosecution in four major cases, including one for his alleged involvement in the murder of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
