The Nagaland unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday merged with the opposition Naga Peoples' Front (NPF).

The formal merger was held at the NPF Central Office here in presence of AAP Nagaland chief Dr S Amos and NPF president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu.

The state unit of the AAP was formed in May 2016. It contested in three seats in the February assembly election but did not taste success.

Despite the NPF being in the opposition, AAP members sought to join the party to work for better transformation of the society, Amos said.

"The AAP unanimously and willingly agreed to merge with the NPF after thorough analysis and preparation towards working in unity for the growth of the state," he said.

Welcoming AAP members in the party, Liezietsu said Nagaland being a small state, its parties need to come together and remain strong.

"The AAP is a strong party and ruling in the National Capital by surviving all onslaughts of the central government," said Liezietsu, a former chief minister.

The NPF ruled the state for 10 years since 2008 before losing the February election. It won in 26 seats in that polls.
