'Nature Bazaar', a new crafts and organic produce market for artisans from India and abroad, was inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit here today.
The market, the result of a collaboration between Delhi Tourism and Dastkar, a society which aims at improving the economic status of craftspeople, is to be located near Chhatarpur Metro station in south Delhi.
It would be a round-the-year cultural and retail hub with a lively, colourful and constantly changing programme to showcase crafts and natural and organic produce.
Spread over an area of 7,000 sq.M and situated at a place where residents of both Delhi and Gurgaon can easily visit the market, "'Nature Bazaar' will be a vibrant 'green' space in a busy metropolitan area. A module on how to be both Indian and contemporary, environmentally ethical and people-friendly," Dikshit said at the inauguration.
Crafts was the second largest livelihood generator in India and that was the reason why Delhi government was promoting the development of dedicated spaces in the city for craftspeople to come and market their goods directly, Dikshit said.
A South Asia bazaar will be held at the venue from Friday when participants from Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan, along with Indian craftsmen, will be displaying their handicrafts and handlooms at the market.
