Uma Sudhir of NDTV bagged the prestigious Chameli Devi Jain award for the year 2017.
Sudhir, executive editor of NDTV (South), was chosen for the recognition for her impressive body of work covering vital issues relating to politics, children, women, human rights, agriculture, rural distress and minority issues.
The Media Foundation, which gives the award, said in a statement, "Her incisive and analytical reports help create awareness of ground realities in various states. The jurors were impressed with the amount of work put into her stories through travelling, talking to people, examining underlying issues and finally conveying the stories with a humane touch".
The jury also recommended journalist Suraksha P of the New Indian Express with an honourable mention for her series on leprosy patients with no access to social benefit schemes. She reported that the biometric details of such patients could not be captured as they had lost their fingerprints due to the disease.
This year's jury comprised three senior journalists namely, Rajdeep Sardesai, Ritu Sarin and Lalita Panicker.
The award will be presented on March 9 at the India International Centre in the national capital. It will be followed by the B G Verghese Memorial Lecture, to be delivered by Justice Ajit Prakash Shah on the topic 'Chief Justice: First Among Equal'.
Named after Chameli Devi Jain, a freedom fighter and home maker, the award has been recognising women journalists for the past 38 years for upholding standards of excellence through a sustained body of work.
