Neyveli workers call off token strike

Workers of state-run Neyveli Lignite Corporation called off their one-day token strike after the management agreed to provide compensation to the family of a former contract workman, killed by a CISF jawan yesterday.
Nearly 12,000 workers were on one-day token strike, called by Joint Action Council of all the trade unions of the company in protest against killing of the workman.
"The management and the Joint Action Council have reached an agreement to provide a compensation package to the family of the deceased former worker in a shooting incident by a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan" a senior company official, who did not wish to be quoted, told PTI.

The official, however, did not provide details of the compensation package announced.
"The production was not impacted and power generation too is maintained," the official said adding that 12,000 workers of the 19,000 employees had proceeded on the token strike.
The workers will resume on duty in the night shift beginning 10 pm, the official added.

The state-run lignite miner has three opencast lignite mines of total capacity of 28.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, and one open cast lignite mine of capacity 2.1 MTPA at Barsingsar, Rajasthan.
It also has three thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of 2,490 mega watt (mw) at Neyveli and one thermal power station at Barsingsar, Rajasthan, with an installed capacity of 250 mw.

Shares of the company closed at Rs 57.95 apiece, up 0.26 per cent on the BSE from the previous close.
