NHRC seeks reports on Dwarka water shortage

National Human Rights Commission today sought reports from Delhi Government, DDA and Delhi Jal Board over alleged shortage of water supply in Dwarka area of the national capital.
According to an NHRC statement released today, notices in this connection were served to the Chief Secretary, Delhi Government, Vice-Chairman, Delhi Development Authority and Chief Executive Officer, Delhi Jal Board, calling for reports within four weeks.
The notices were issued after the Commission took cognizance of a complaint alleging that over six lakh people are facing serious problems due to acute shortage of water supply in the Dwarka Sub-City of the National Capital.

Observing that the allegations made in the complaint are serious in nature involving violation of human rights, Justice D. Murugesan, Member, NHRC today issued the notices.
"Allegedly, Dwarka gets around 4 to 5 million gallon per day against a demand of 15 million gallon. As a result, the people living in the sub-city are forced to pay exorbitant money to the concerned authorities for water tankers.
"The Sub-City is still under development and the present population is yet to reach even the half mark of the capacity of the residential colonies. The issue has been reported in the media also. However, despite several complaints to improve the water supply, the Government authorities are not taking any action," the statement said.
