He was 88 and is survived by his wife Pushpa, a son and two daughters.

Lal was born in January 1924 in Bagasara in Amreli district in Gujarat and his last show was in Ahmedabad in June this year, his son Harshad Vora said.

His last rites will be performed at S G Road crematorium tomorrow.

Condoling his death, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "World renowned magician and proud son of Gujarat, K Lal left us today. May his soul rest in peace. My condolences to his family."

Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil said, "Through his art, he made Gujarat and India proud in the world. Using magical illusions of Mahatma Gandhi, he spread the message of truth and non-violence."

Indian film legend Raj Kapoor had once said about Lal that "If you examine his blood, you will find nothing but magic in it."
