The Coast Guard has doubled the number of its stations from 20 to 42 as part of strengthening security after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, a top ICG official said here today.
"After the 26/11 terror attack at Mumbai, Coast Guard has been strengthening our coastal security. We have increased the number of ICG stations from 20 to 42 after the attack," ICG Director General Vice-Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal said.
He told reporters after a visit to Coast Guard at nearby Beypore.
Thapliuyal said the Coast Guard is in the process of acquiring more ships, aircraft and modern equipment. "At present we have 85 ships and 62 aircraft and we plan to increase it to 150 ships and 100 aircraft," he said.
The Vice Admiral, who later visited the Indian Coast Guard Academy at Irinavu in Kannur, said they planned to give Color Code and registration number to each fishing vessel and Radio Frequency Identity Cards to fisher folk to avoid misuse of the vessels.
