The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has arrested a passenger at the international airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle Rs 57 lakh in foreign currency out of the country.
Based on specific intelligence inputs, officers of DRI Hyderabad Zonal unit intercepted the passenger last night, a DRI release said today.
"He had cleared immigration and security checks, and was to board a flight to Dubai. During the examination of his baggage, foreign currency in the form of UAE Dirhams, Saudi Riyals and Omani Riyals was found," it said.
During his interrogation, the passenger revealed that the foreign currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers and did not belong to him. It was being carried at the behest of someone for delivery in Dubai, it added.
"The currency was obtained from unauthorised persons in violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and was being exported illegally, in contravention of the Customs Act. The currency, equivalent to around Rs 57 lakh in Indian rupees, was seized," the release said.
The passenger has been arrested and further probe into the case is in progress.
