A person was injured when the sub-divisional police officer in East Midnapore district of West Bengal allegedly opened fire following a tiff with local residents over playing of music and cracker-bursting adjacent to his residence.
SDPO (Egra) Manoranjan Ghosh allegedly fired from his service revolver when some locals early this morning started "pelting stones" at his official bungalow and tried to get inside, a senior police officer said.
The incident occurred at around 2 AM, when some labourers, who had organised a Kali Puja adjacent to the SDPO's bungalow, fired crackers and beat 'dhaks' (drums), he said.
"The SDPO asked them to stop making loud noise, which annoyed some labourers. In the morning the angry labourers attacked the SDPO's official residence, pelting stones and then tried to get inside the bungalow. It was at that time the labourers alleged that Ghosh fired...We are looking into it," district SP Alok Rajoria told PTI.
The SP said that a person was injured, though it was still not clear if the injury was from a gun shot...We are waiting for an official medical report.
"The primary report does not suggest that it was an injury because of gun-firing," Rajoria said.
Ghosh, the SP said, has lodged a complaint with the local police station. No one has been arrested.
