One person was killed and another injured when security men fired to prevent theft at a construction camp of the Powergrid Corporation of India at Diju Chapori in Assam's Lakhimpur district, police said.
On being prevented from stealing power line instruments and construction materials last night, two alleged thieves attacked Home Guard personnel, forcing them to retaliate by firing seven rounds, OC of Lakhimpur police station Shasidhar Sarma today said.
The deceased, identified as Madan Sarma, succumbed to his injuries in a hospital, while an injured Imran Hussain was undergoing treatment, Sarma said.
Angered by the incident, some local people attacked the camp and set it on fire damaging construction materials and an excavator there, he said.
They claimed that the security men had attacked the duo without any reason when they were returning from a nearby market. They also demanded compensation, he added.
