Resident Shyam Sharma along with younger brother was going to Surajpur market in his car when four persons on two bikes started following them, police said.
Even as Sharma gave space to the car, they still did not overtake him. When he stopped the car, the bikers came towards his vehicle and shot at him, they said.
As Sharma ducked down, the bullets hit one of the biker identified as Manoj, police said, adding that the other assailants fled from the spot leaving the injured person and a bike behind.
The injured was admitted in the hospital where he died during his treatment, he said.
After the incident, the shopkeepers downed the shutters of their shops in protest.
"Old enmity or road rage could be cause of the shootout. A few persons have been detained for questioning," a senior police officer said.
