Over one lakh cases pending in Delhi High Court

Over one lakh cases are pending with the Delhi High Court, a biennial report for 2010-12 said.
The report, which was released by Chief Justice D Murugesan this morning, showed that there is decline in the pendency of cases with the disposal figure of 1,22,141 cases between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012.
According to the report, as on March 31, 2012 the total pendency figure stood at 1,15,512 cases.
Giving a detailed analysis of pendency, filing and disposal the report said, the total number of 1,18,855 cases were pending as on April 1, 2011 and 1,18,789 which included 3,9,237 main cases and 7,9,525 miscellaneous applications were filed as on March 31, 2012.
4,2,693 main cases and 7,9,448 miscellaneous applications were disposed of during the period.
The court has devoted just over four minutes 36 seconds on an average on each case in 2012 whereas five minutes and 21 seconds were devoted on each case in 2011.
Showing substantial increase in the cost incurred per case per day, the report said it was Rs 2,472 for the year 2010-11 and Rs 2,584 for 2011-12. The total expenditure incurred for the year 2010-11 was Rs 94,83,59,274 while in the year 2011-12 it was nearly Rs 100 crore (Rs 99,24,18,036).
Justice Ravindra Bhat, chairman of the Committee which prepared the report, in his acknowledgement said "This two-year period saw a continuous decline in the pendency of cases (3.07 percent in 2010-2011 and 5.14 percent in 2011-2012).
"For the period 2010-2011, the average disposal per judge per day was 4.49 for main cases and 8.08 for miscellaneous applications. This was better in 2011-2012 when on an average a judge disposed of 5.29 main cases and 9.85 miscellaneous applications per day."
The last report released by the high court was for 2008-2010.
