The attackers fired at least 12 to 15 rockets on the check post at Shaikh Landak in Bannu district after which police engaged them in a shootout.
Media reports said at least two policemen were injured and at least one militant was killed in the attack that began at about 3:00 AM.
Superintendent of Police, Iqbal said that heavy backup had been called in to fight off the assailants as the police deployed at the post did not have enough firepower to hold off the militants for long.
