Parl hearing of Nepal's ambassadors to India, China conclude

A Nepalese parliamentary committee today held a hearing for the proposed appointment of the country's new Ambassadors to India and China before formally nominating them to their respective positions.
Deep Kumar Upadhyay, former Nepalese Ambassador to India, whose name was also recommended for new envoy to India by the cabinet last month, and Leela Mani Paudyal, who has been recommended for Ambassador to China, responded to queries raised by the members during the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) meeting.
Upadhyay was unceremoniously recalled by Nepal as Ambassador to India in May over charges of "non-cooperation" and indulging in "anti- government activities" when he had confronted the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli regarding the cancellation of President Bidya Devi Bhandari's scheduled visit to India.

Bhandari was scheduled to visit India in May during the height of Madhesi agitation for which Oli had often blamed India.
As per the constitutional provision, candidates recommended for Ambassadors and heads of constitutional bodies are required to pass through the Parliamentary hearing, before the government formally appointments them to the respected positions.
Presenting the agendas in course of the hearing, the nominees expressed their commitment to further strengthen and expand the bilateral relations between Nepal and the host countries and taking the ties to a new height.
They also pledged to keep national interest in mind while performing their duties as envoys, according to sources in the Parliament.
