The Pakistan Cricket Board has finally formalised Waqar Younis as coach of the national side after chairman Najam Sethi had declared the former pacer's appointment last week.
A committee constituted by PCB comprising Director Domestic Cricket Operations Intikhab Alam, Director Game Development Haroon Rashid and chief selector Moin Khan met today in Lahore and unanimously endorsed Sethi's choice to give a two-year contract to Waqar.
Waqar, who is currently in India in connection with IPL assignment said: "I am extremely pleased to have been selected as the head coach. My immediate aim would be to prepare the team for the upcoming busy cricket season including the next year's ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand."
The former Pakistan skipper, who previously served as bowling coach of the national side in 2006-07 and briefly in 2009, and as head coach in 2010-11, will be joining the Misbah ul Haq-led side in June 2014.
After Dav Whatmore's contract with Pakistan ended in February, team manager Moin was also appointed coach till the World Twenty20 in April.
Waqar's first assignment is a home series against Australia in the UAE in October, comprising one-off Twenty20, three ODIs and two Tests.
