A PIL seeking to cancellation of elections to Aravakurichi and Thanjavur assembly constituencies, scheduled for May 23, was filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High court today.
R Yowan Thangaraj in his PIL submitted merely deferring the elections by two notifications on May 14 and 15 by allowing to contest with the same candidates, "who were charged of distributing money to the voters" instead of cancelling it would not do any purpose.
The Election Commission had come to the conclusion that the money and gift items, seized by the flying squad in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi constituencies, were meant for distribution to the electors.
He sought the High Court to give a direction to the EC to stay all the election proceedings in these constituencies.
He also sougt to direct the EC to issue re-notification of the elections.
He submitted that Rs 4.77 crore and dhotis and saris worth Rs 1.30 crore had been seized from one Anbunathan's house in Aravakurichi.
Similarly in Thanjavur money to the tune of Rs 1.4 crore had been distibuted to voters in 13 wards in, he contended.
Since the Election Commission had come to the conclusion that money had been distributed to voters, the May 23 elections should be cancelled, he contended.
The Court posted the case for further hearing.
