Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought soil from the Parliament House complex and water from river Yamuna for using in the construction of Andhra Pradesh's capital city Amaravati for which he laid the foundation stone today.
Modi handed over the pots containing the soil and water to chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the foundation stone laying ceremony.
"This symbol has message and strength that Delhi will always stand and move shoulder to shoulder in Andhra's journey to touch new heights," Modi said.
Striking a chord with the people, Modi referred to the famous Telugu poet Srirangam Srinivasarao's magnum opus 'Mahaprasthanam' (towards a great march) and said that he has symbolically brought the soil and water on the path of Amaravati emerging as a great city and "people's capital".
Naidu expressed gratitude for the PM's gesture in bringing the soil and water from the national capital.
Prime Minister's gesture is in accordance with the AP Government's campaign of gathering soil and water from about 16,000 villages and also municipal wards for using them in capital construction to promote a sense of belongingness among the people.
Under the 'Mana Matti, Mana Neeru, Mana Amaravati' (our soil, our water and our Amaravati) campaign, soil and sacred water from prominent pilgrim centres like Manasa Sarovar, Varanasi, Ajmir Dargah and Medak church has been brought for the capital construction.
Similarly, soil and water from the birth places of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, BR Ambedkar and former President APJ Abdul Kalam has also been brought.
The soil and water were mixed in Amaravati and Naidu sprinkled it the capital area in a chopper yesterday.
Sample water drawn from major rivers of the country including Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri and Ganges was also brought for purpose of using in the capital construction.
