Superintendent of Police Prafulla Patra said a joint combing operation was conducted by personnel of Armed Reserve Police and SOG of Odisha Police in Kendrapaju-Kachapaju forests under Purunakataka police station bordering Kandhamal district when the Maoists were holding a meeting.
As the ultras fired, security personnel retaliated and in the shootout, one ultra was believed to have been injured as blood stains were found at the spot, he said.
The security personnel seized a country-made gun, an SLR, 13 detonators, eight live catridges, a bundle of wire, food and other items, he said.
