Police is taking serious action to nab culprits involved in the attack on a woman judicial magistrate in Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police Ashok Kumar said today.
"We hear that the JM could have been attacked due to previous enmity. But we are making a serious and thorough investigation into the incident," he told reporters here.
Vedaranyam Magistrate R Latha, holding additional charge of Nagapattinam Judicial Magistrate Court, was returning home in a car on March 18 night when some persons intercepted it and her and the driver near Vailankanni. Both have been hospitalised.
The DGP earlier reviewed the law and order situation in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts, where a series of caste-based murders had taken place in the last two months.
He held closed door discussions with officials, including IGP Abhay Kumar Singh, DIG Murugan and SPs Vikraman and Aswin Kotnis and Deputy Commissioner Suresh Kumar, police said.
The DGP said police had been advised to take "strong and unbiased" action against the culprits involved in creating communal problem in the two districts.
"I thoroughly discussed the issues behind the murders, and modus operandi behind such incidents," he said adding he was satisfied with the action taken by police.
The accused had been arrested in connection with all the murders. Some murders could not be prevented for reasons beyond the control of any human being, he said.
When the reporters pointed to the caste clashes, he said sufficient steps would be taken to defuse tension, and infuse confidence in the people.
He refused to comment on illegal granite mining, being probed by senior IAS officer U Sagayam.
"It is a matter pending in the court," he said.
On the anonymous threat to Sagayam's life, he said the officer had been given "adequate protection".
