Pondy Lt Guv bats for harnessing techology to check crimes

Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today batted for harnessing technology for faster communication and speedy prevention of crimes.
A community WhatsApp group would be created linking police, the commune panchayat, PWD and Electricity department along with members of the community to share grievances and to seek speedy redress, she said.
During her interaction with industrialists and others at Vadamangalam village, she asked factory owners besides entrepreneurs in the Union Territory to approach police for action against those trying to extort money.
A press release from Raj Nivas said Bedi had visited the village following a representation from the Industries Owners and Service Providers Welfare Association that there were instances of industrialists being approached by those trying to extort money for various local events.
Industrialists complained that they were forced to shell out money for various local events and sought her intervention to end the menace, the release said.
She advised industrialists during the meeting to approach police for immediate action whenever they were forced to give away money.
"Beat officers (police) would meet the industrialists frequently during their rounds in the area to keep a vigil on such incidents," she said.
Bedi directed municipal authorities to initiate steps to solve drinking water problems of the people.
A timeframe of 14 days was given to end the drinking water problem and also to ensure proper street lights.
Bedi later inspected the ongoing beach nourishment work undertaking by the Dredging Corporation of India in association with Port department.
She advised the corporation to complete the work of dredging the sand within the timeframe.
