Police today resorted to cane-charge and fired teargas shells to disperse an irate crowd which attacked a police station here after the death of two persons in a road accident.
Five police personnel and a few protesters suffered minor injuries in stone pelting and lathicharge, police said, adding that five persons have been arrested in connection with the violence.
Two men, both aged 27, were ran over by a bus last night after their two-wheeler skidded while they attempted to avoid a police check for riders without helmets.
Protesting against the incident, local people blocked roads and took out a march to Panniyankara police station after which it turned violent, police said.
As the agitators pelted stones at the station, lathicharge was done and teargas shells fired, they said.
The crew of Asianet TV and reporter and photo journalist of Malaylam daily Mathrubumi were allegedly assaulted by the crowd, they said.
Local MP M K Raghavan told PTI that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had assured him that financial help would be provided to the families of the victims of the mishap.
Chandy also said the government would consider the request for providing job to one member of the victims' families, Raghavan claimed.
Kozhikode District Collector K V Mohankumar has called for an all-party meeting in view of the tense situation in Panniyankara.
