Protests against the recent killing of two youths in a firing incident continued to rock Nowgam locality here.
A day after army admitted its mistake and assured appropriate action against any one found guilty, groups of angry protesters took to streets and blocked the main road connecting the city with bypass at several places between Naikbagh and Nowgam chowk, forcing suspension of the public and private transport, officials said.
Two local youths were killed and as many injured when army troops opened fire on them while they were travelling in a car at Chattergam in Budgam district on Monday.
Army yesterday admitted its mistake in the firing and assured that the inquiry into the incident will be completed within 10 days and those found guilty of violating the rules of engagement will be dealt in accordance with the law.
The Army also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed and Rs five lakh each to the injured.
Normalcy had returned this morning to the locality after four days of violent clashes and strict restrictions as shops and vehicular traffic resumed, officials said.
However, the shopkeepers pulled down the shutters soon after a large group of people took to streets and started protesting against the killings, demanding stern action against the troops involved in the killing.
The vehicular traffic was also suspended and diverted through other routes.
Police assisted by paramilitary forces rushed to the area to restore law and order, resulting in minor clashes between the protesters and the law enforcing agencies, the officials said.
