"It is my view (that he should be declared the party's PM candidate) and demand that Rahul should be entrusted with the responsibility," Nirupam told reporters here.
He was replying when pointed out that Rahul had hinted at his willingness in this regard.
The Congress MP said, party President Sonia Gandhi had said that Prime Ministerial nominee would be announced at an appropriate time, and "now was the time".
"The issue may come up during the meeting of All India Congress Committee on January 17, and if given a chance, he would raise the issue there," Nirupam said.
On Bollywood actor Salman Khan praising Narendra Modi, Nirupam said his comments should not be taken seriously.
"Modi had no chance of becoming the Prime Minister," he said.
BJP has no presence in half the country and how would it muster the majority, he added.
