Hundreds of workers belonging to various parties, barring ruling AIADMK, were today taken into custody when they tried to stage rail roko in various parts in the district in support of NLC workers who are on strike demanding wage revision, police said.
The workers tried to picket the Cholan Express here, Chennai Express at Nellikkuppam, Guruvayur Express at Virudhachalam, besides Tiruchy express at Chidambaram (Trichy Express) but police took them into custody.
Former DMK minister M R K Panneerselvam and some workers were not allowed to enter the Neyveli railway station, police said.
Panneerselvam said chief minister Jayalalithaa should pressure the Centre to hold conciliatory talks between NLC management and union representatives.
If no action was taken by the Centre, the chief minister should convene the talks to end the stir, he said.
Meanwhile, the strike by NLC workers entered the 34th day today.
